01

The Northern Villages

Area highlights - Monterosso • Vernazza

The two northern villages anchor the coastline with their distinct characters. Monterosso offers the only proper sandy beach in Cinque Terre - golden sand, terracotta umbrellas, and clam-pasta restaurants along the promenade. Vernazza is the postcard village: a natural harbour cupped by stacked pastel houses, fishing boats moored at the piazza, and a medieval castle watching from above. Both are busier than the southern villages, but their energy and beauty are unmatched.

Highlights

  • Only proper sandy beach in Cinque Terre
  • Best train connections - frequent service to both villages
  • Widest selection of restaurants, bars, and shops
  • Vernazza's harbour is the most photographed spot on the coast

Things to keep in mind

  • Busiest area, especially midday between 11am and 3pm
  • Higher average room prices than the southern villages
  • Vernazza piazza gets packed on cruise-ship days
  • Some rooms face internal streets rather than the sea

The Vineyard Villages

Area highlights - Corniglia • Manarola

The central hills press closest to the sea here, and every available slope is carved into terraced vineyards - the iconic Cinque Terre landscape. Corniglia sits high on a promontory, quiet and slow, with a view that runs for miles in both directions. Manarola spills down a ravine in a cascade of painted houses, its harbour a living painting and its vineyards among the most photographed in Italy. This is the quieter, more romantic heart of the coast.

Highlights

  • Quietest villages - fewer people, especially in the evening
  • Iconic vineyard scenery - the classic Cinque Terre landscape
  • Most authentic local atmosphere, especially Corniglia after dark
  • Lower average prices than the northern villages

Things to keep in mind

  • Corniglia requires 380 steps from the station (or a shuttle bus)
  • Very limited dining options in Corniglia after sunset
  • Manarola's harbour area gets busy during peak hours
  • No sandy beach - swimming is from rocky platforms only

The Southern Harbour

Area highlights - Riomaggiore

Riomaggiore is the southern gateway to Cinque Terre, the first village reached from La Spezia, and often the one that leaves the strongest impression. Its main street runs straight uphill from a sheltered marina where fishermen mend nets beside restaurants serving just-caught anchovies. The houses climb so steeply they seem to stack on one another, and the sunset from the harbour wall turns the entire facade rose-gold. Riomaggiore has more evening energy than any village except Monterosso.

Highlights

  • First stop from La Spezia - easiest access from the train
  • Lively evening scene with wine bars and restaurants open late
  • Stunning sunset views from the harbour and marina
  • Good range of accommodation price points

Things to keep in mind

  • Main street gets congested during peak afternoon hours
  • Very steep streets throughout the village
  • The harbour viewpoint is popular at sunset - arrives early
  • No proper beach - swimming from rocky platforms
